Rubik's Cube World Record

The Rubik's Cube World Record

When Erno Rubik invented the cube in 1974, he had no idea if his new puzzle could actually be solved. In fact, it took him over a month to solve his own cube.

Fast forward to the present day and the time to beat is an unbelievable 4.69 seconds! That amazing time was achieved by Patrick Ponce of the USA. Unsurprisingly, robots are even faster, easily beating Ponce's World Record. A robot solved the Rubik’s Cube in 0.637 seconds! Speed cubes are becoming lighter, slicker, faster – who knows what the next Rubik’s Cube World Record will be?

The Best Speed Cube Yet?

Speedcubing needs quick fingers and an even faster brain. Plus, of course, the right tools.

Speed cubes are different to regular Rubik’s cubes. They look the same – but a speed cube is lighter and easier to turn, making it faster to use. If you want to solve the Rubik’s Cube in your fastest possible time, then a speed cube is for you. It’ll take you to the next level of speedcubing – and introduce you to a new dimension of fun!

The Best Speed Cube Yet?
Famous Cubers

Famous Cubers

Pop star Justin Bieber can solve the Rubik’s Cube in 83 seconds. Actor Will Smith is faster, with a time of 55 seconds. In fact, he’s even quicker than the cube’s inventor Erno Rubik – who solves is own puzzle in 60 seconds. What’s your best time?

Try our new speed cube and see how fast you can solve the cube.

Just when you thought it couldn't get tougher… how about unscrambling the Rubik’s Cube with your feet… or even blindfolded? The possibilities are endless!

Finger Tricks with Rubik’s Cube

What’s the best way to solve the Rubik’s Cube even faster? Finger tricks!

Finger tricks involve a series of moves that you can complete using one fluid hand movement.

By using just your fingers instead of your hand, you save loads of time as you don't need to re-grip your cube between each move.

Repeating a series of moves over and over again helps your fingers get used to the moves, becoming faster and faster. Best of all, you can practice on the bus, while you’re watching video clips… anywhere!

You’ll find some great examples of Finger Trick videos on YouTube – take a look at Alexander Lau’s introduction video for some fantastic tips.

Customise Your Cube

No two speed cubes are the same! Customise yours to make it absolutely right for you.

You can adjust the tension of your speed cube so that it moves easily and you’re in control. Read our Cube Customisation guide to see how to change springs and tension – and how to apply cube lube.

Using cube lube keeps your Rubik’s Cube turning smoothly and quickly for maximum speed.

We recommend that you apply Rubik’s Lube after you have started using your Rubik’s cube, allowing your cube’s mechanics to get used to working first. Rubik’s Lube uses our own unique formula, maximising your cube’s potential and helping you to achieve faster and faster times. Why settle for an inferior lube? Make your speed cube the quickest it can be!

The Nations Cup

In July 2017, the first ever Nations Cup contest was held. 72 teams from 42 countries competed for The Nations Cup.

Throughout the 35-year history of competitive speedcubing, entrants have solved the iconic puzzle alone, but the new Rubik’s Nations Cup format saw teams of three complete the Rubik’s Cube in relay.

In teams of three, the members solved one 3x3x3 cube one after the other. The winning team was the team with the best combined score.

Germany won this year's competition – being crowned the fastest cubing country in the world!

The team winners were:

  Sebastian Weyer

  Philipp Weyer

  Cornelius Dieckmann

Initiated by Professor Erno Rubik, RCSA was established as a not-for-profit organisation to promote and support competitive puzzle solving and the educational use of puzzles around the world.

It creates a legally and financially transparent and accountable platform for speedcubing to enable exponential growth for the sport. RCSA is licensed to use the Rubik's name and image in competitive cubing and as such can efficiently raise philanthropic and corporate funds to support cubing. RCSA's initial funds have been received from Prof Erno Rubik, Rubik's Brand, and GAN Puzzles. RCSA's first license was granted to Red Bull Mindgamers to create a professional global platform for speedcubing.

RCSA is not directly involved in the Red Bull championship series, which is organised independently by Red Bull Mindgamers.

RCSA has also been sponsoring events under WCA rules, including the 2017 Rubik's World Championship; the 2017 Polish Nationlas and Polish Open; the 2017 Hungarian Open and several others. RCSA sponsorship can be requested by anyone wishing to organise a cubing event anywhere in the world.

Standard Rubik's Cubes are optimized for mass distribution. They meet the highest health and safety standards, are manufactured in strictly controlled factories by direct quality assurance.

The Cubes are packaged in child-safe packaging and are distributed in major stores around the world. Over 90% of speedcubers were introduced to cubing by a Rubik's branded cube, before they went on to try "speedcubes". These speedcube products show huge variation in source, quality, price, look, and feel. They are optimized for very experienced, competitive cubers where technological solutions may result in split-seconds of advantage. In order to maintain that edge, speedcubes typically must compromise on health and safety measures and often their source is unknown. It is unclear which factories produce them and what materials are being used.

As a brand-owner, Rubik's is obliged to take very strict measures in protecting its intellectual property. As a toy distributor, Rubik's must take all precautions to keep toy stores free from potentially hazardous products.

At the same time, Rubik's has never stopped any individual cuber to use customized cubes in competition, regardless of its source or make. It is not Rubik's business to monitor or influence the usage of various speedcubes by individuals. In this spirit, Rubik's has endorsed and continues to endorse "freedom of choice" at cubing events.

Having said that, Rubik's will continue to firmly protect its intellectual property in every instance when "freedom of choice" becomes a guise for illegitimate commercial activity, motivated not by sporting spirit but clear financial gain. Rubik's does not and will not allow any promotion of infringing products and will take action against commercial ventures attempting to make a business of selling such products.
