NO. NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!
If I had a pound for every time someone gave that ill-informed advice here, I'd be a rich man.
Vaselline rots cubes. It destroys them. Some people think it's great because it works, it's cheap and it seems to be risk free. Then later when they re-lube, they clean out the cube and assume the black gunk in the old lube is dirt. It's not. It's debris that has been corroded off the cube itself.
If you're one of the few who's enjoyed success of this evil stuff, I'm happy for you. But the fact is that your cube is weaker for the application of the stuff.
Use only 100% silicone spray (I'm not sure about jig-a-loo, some people swear by it, but as I can't get it in the UK, I can't
confirm about it), lubix lube, rubik's cube lube, maru cube lube or any lube specifically designed for a cube.
Do NOT use vaselline, WD40 or any lube based on petroleum products.
